Activities for this Week – Space

In partnership with NASA, SpaceX, a private company, launched the Crew Dragon 2, the first spacecraft to launch from the USA in 9 years. The successful launch on Saturday 30th May was the first manned spacecraft ever to launch by a private company and sparks the beginning of space tourism and maybe even one day, trips to Mars!

You can re-watch the launch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI3fiNkgTOU

Write a persuasive letter applying to be the next astronaut for NASA to go into Space. Read through the skills required to make you the best candidate. https://www.spacekids.co.uk/astronauts/

Spellings

Create a word web using 5 of the Common Exception words. For each word, find 5 more related words. https://cdn.oxfordowl.co.uk/2019/08/29/13/56/09/5a42eb6a-f57f-4dc4-a66e-bd4c5e27e4b7/SpellingWordList_Y5-6.pdf

Maths

Continue to use the links below to complete the Bitesize or White Rose Maths daily lessons. Here are some further Maths challenges related to area and perimeter:

Work through these interactive quizzes: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/basic-geo/basic-geo-area-and-perimeter

Find objects around your home and estimate the area and perimeter. Once you have made an estimate, measure the actual area and perimeter. Were you close?

More games: https://www.mathplayground.com/area_perimeter.html

Make a map of your newly discovered planet. Draw it out onto grid paper. Each square on your map represents 5 metres squared (m²). Your planet must include: mountains 220m², a water source 140m² and three islands that must each be between 120m² and 240m².

Complete the following activities: https://nrich.maths.org/7280&part=

Order the planets in our solar system based on the number of Earth days it takes for them to orbit the Sun: Saturn: 10,759 days, Earth: 365 days, Mercury: 88 days, Uranus: 30,687 days, Jupiter: 4,333 days, Mars: 687 days, Venus: 225 days & Neptune: 60,190 days.

Learning Projects

Research the importance of the Moon to life on Earth. Research the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth and create a model of the Earth, Moon and Sun. You could draw this or even use cardboard strips to create your model. https://safeyoutube.net/w/miF6

Research space exploration history and create a timeline of how people have travelled into space. Think about when the first rocket was launched? When did the first man go to space? How about the first woman? What other significant events can you add to your timeline?

Examine the different life stages of a star and explore the names and shapes of some famous constellations. Create a poster of displaying the different constellations which can be used to teach your family. Make it as creative as possible! https://www.ducksters.com/science/physics/constellations.php

Listen to Holst’s ‘The Planets’. Select a planet and decide and what you think that planet would be like. Create a dance or set of movements to go with the music which will portray this.

Research the different components of a spacecraft to design your own spacecraft. Think carefully about what it needs to include for astronauts to survive in space. Can you make a small-scale model using resources from around your home? Here is some inspiration to help: https://www.nasa.gov/kidsclub/index.html

Watch Neil Armstrong’s moon landing and listen/read to what his first words on the Moon were. Imagine you have been chosen to be the first person to land on Mars. Create a poster with a quote of what you would say. You could research and draw the surface of Mars and add your quote above it!
