Tuesday 19th January - Exploring Certainty and Bias 4
- Watch and listen carefully to Mr Watson’s video.
- When you read the fish articles, did you notice the impact of different word choices?
- To help you think about this, look at Girl Lost. The facts have not changed but the impact is very different depending on word choice.
- Now read Two Versions. This is writing about a tightrope walker, Mich Kemeter. Which words are different in each version? What is the effect of these differences? How do they influence the reader differently?
- Now look at the Captions These captions originally come from a book called Ripley’s Believe it or Not which is full of amazing, unbelievable and strange stories.
- Today you are going rewrite some of these captions on lined paper. For each you will write two versions:
- one which influences us to think positive things about the story
- one which influences readers to think negative
- You can only change the word choices, not the facts! (Some words are in bold to suggest you change them, but you can make other changes too.)
- Share one pair of captions in an agreed way with your teacher. Can people tell which is which?
